I bought this comic because I really liked the illustration of Nightwing, it's an interesting style. However, I was so fixated on the image of Nightwing that I didn't realize the Nazi references until I got home and read the comic. Had I noticed that at the store I would have left the comic there. It's interesting that if you take the figure of Nightwing out of this image, on it's own it's harmless, but when you put it into this context with those surroundings it becomes something quite unsettling. In my humble opinion, it's really in poor taste to use Nazi's as fodder for entertainment. It cheapens the whole scope of the tragedy of the war, treating it like a commodity rather than something that deserves to be respected. I find it's also quite disrespectful towards those who were affected by the war, especially for those who lost members of their family or their friends.
Some things need to be treated with an abundance of respect, rather than to be used as comic book entertainment, and the tragedy of WWII is one of those things. Obviously during the war, comics did the same type of thing, showing the superheroes fighting Nazi's, but that was a way for society to cope with an ongoing, horrific tragedy where as this is just exploiting it after the fact. Do we really need to see Nightwing saluting like a Nazi? (He's not making the exact same salute as the the Nazis, but that's clearly the concept they are aiming to invoke with this image.) Is this comic book story so critical that it had to be published despite the very real possibility that someone might be hurt on some level when they see this? I don't think so. I don't think you have to be Jewish to know that either. I'm not Jewish. We don't need this sort of "art" in our society. It's not worth it. It's a shame to see such amazing talent being used to create this type of image, and to see Nightwing being portrayed like this. I mean, if I had the opportunity to do an official Nightwing comic I certainly wouldn't depict him as a Nazi! I just don't know what the folks at DC Comics are thinking? Just the way I see things.
